As you know, the US-based e-commerce giant Amazon is preparing a competitor to SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service with its project called Project Kuiper. The company introduced user terminals that will enable subscribers to get broadband internet access via satellite.

Amazon aims to provide “fast and affordable” broadband satellite internet service worldwide with Project Kuiper, which it has been working on since 2018. For this, the company will establish a satellite constellation of 3,236 satellites in low earth orbit.

Three different antennas were designed

Amazon has introduced three different antennas that differ in size and connection speed. It should be noted that the devices in question are engineering models. Therefore, the final versions may show some differences.

Ultra compact: the basic model that can offer speeds of up to 100 Mbps. This terminal weighs only 450 grams and is the size of a tablet. Its biggest advantage is that it is portable. It will be the company’s smallest and most affordable customer terminal.
Standard: Standard antenna designed to be installed on rooftops. Its weight is under 2.2 kilograms. This terminal stands out with its speed of up to 400 Mbps. It will be one of the most powerful client terminals of its size on the market.
Commercial: Designed for commercial use, this terminal has a rectangular design. It will be geared towards enterprise, government and telecommunications applications that require even more bandwidth. This antenna can provide connections at speeds up to 1 Gbps.

When will Amazon satellite internet be available?

Amazon said it expects to manufacture the antenna, which is designed to be installed on rooftops, for under $400. It did not disclose how much it plans to charge customers for terminals or broadband service.

The company plans to launch its first test satellites into orbit later this year. The next goal is to start mass production of its satellites in late 2023. Customers are expected to have access to the service by the end of 2024.
