Although AMD had a good price-performance balance with Radeon 7000 series graphics cards, it could not keep up with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4090 card. However, a while ago senior AMD officials offered an interesting perspective on the situation, explaining why they haven’t released an RDNA 3 GPU to compete directly with the GeForce RTX 4090.

It is up to you

AMD EVP Rick Bergman and AMD Senior Vice President David Wang said in an interview with Japanese publication ITMedia that they can make a Radeon RX 7000 graphics card that will directly rival the GeForce RTX 4090, but this card will be at 600W TDP levels. In addition, it was stated that the price of the card would be similar to the RTX 4090.

“We chose not to adopt such a strategy after considering whether it would be acceptable to casual PC gamers,” says Rick Bergman of AMD. Although this statement may sound strange, it is actually a thought with a foundation. There is an efficiency advantage between AMD RDNA 3 and Nvidia ADA in favor of the green team. Yes, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX’s performance is impressive compared to the GeForce RTX 4080, but the RTX 4080 is more advantageous under load. Therefore, if AMD brought a competitor card to the RTX 4090, the power consumption would probably be well ahead of its competitor.

Since AMD is afraid of cost and efficiency factors and has set the $1000 line as a limit for itself, the choice it has made makes sense for them. On the other hand, with RDNA 3, there has been a significant increase in performance in every field compared to the previous generation. AMD wants to continue the performance increase of up to 60 percent in the RDNA 4 architecture when switching from RDNA 2 to RDNA 3. The firm also states that it will focus more on ray tracing and efficiency.
