Competition heats up on your laptop: Ryzen 9 7945HX crushes its rival

AMD challenges Intel with the Ryzen 7045 HX series (Dragon Range) for performance gaming laptops. In this generation, AMD seems to have achieved the performance and efficiency it wants on mobile platforms, while the Ryzen 9 7945HX performs better than Intel’s Core i9-13950HX in games.

AMD has previously compared its 5nm Dragon Range processors to Intel’s older 12th Gen Alder Lake processors. Team in red is now comparing the Core i9-13950HX, the second fastest processor of the latest 13th Gen Raptor Lake mobile processors, with the top model Ryzen 9 7945HX. Let’s also mention that there is only a 100 MHz turbo frequency difference between Intel’s most powerful processor in mobile, the Core i9-13980HX and 13950HX.

AMD is very strong in laptop too

In the tests shared, AMD compared the Asus Strix Scar G17 with Ryzen 9 7945HX processor and RTX 4090 and Gigabyte Aorus 17X with Core i9-13950HX processor and RTX 4090. Tests on Windows 11 were done at 1080p resolution, high settings.

In general, we see that the Ryzen 9 7945HX achieves 10 percent higher gaming performance than the Core i9-13950HX. Depending on the game, the performance difference can reach up to 45 percent. Although the performance difference in games is generally in favor of AMD, the Core i9-13950HX was able to outperform its rival with very few differences in a few games.

According to these values, we see the power of Zen 4 architecture once again. Looking at the data on paper, Intel might be expected to be way ahead, but that’s not the case. For example, the Ryzen 9 7945HX has a 16 core, 32 thread configuration, while the Core i9-13950HX has 24 cores (8P+16E), 32 threads and higher clock speeds.

Power consumption is just as important a topic as performance in laptops. The Ryzen 9 7945HX has a TDP of 55W to 75W, while the Core i9-13950HX has a TDP of 55W to 157W. According to AMD’s benchmarks, the Ryzen 9 7945HX offers 10 percent faster performance than the Core i9-13950HX, but it does so with less power. AMD’s Dragon Range processor laptops will go on sale later this month, and reviews will be available at that time. Independent test results will therefore be the most accurate comparisons, so you may want to wait a bit before making your choice.
