Google is going to make a change in the advertising system of the popular video sharing platform YouTube. The search giant has announced that it will remove overlay ads from videos starting April 6, 2023. The official statement was made on the YouTube help forum.

Overlay ads appear as a type of ad that appears as a banner near the bottom of the content. This ad format, which often conflicts with the playing content and annoys viewers, will disappear from next month.

Banners will no longer appear on videos.

The ad format in question is currently only available on the desktop version of YouTube. It was removed a long time ago on mobile devices. This outdated ad format, which disrupts the video viewing experience of users, will no longer be annoying by appearing above the videos that are playing.

The YouTube app and mobile version use full-screen ads before, during and after the video instead of banner ads. Moreover, viewers have the chance to skip these ads.

By removing overlay ads, Google will not only improve the viewer experience, but shift engagement to higher-performing ad formats on desktop and mobile.
