Global smartphone shipments are on the decline! Here are the numbers

International Data Corporation (IDC) has released its study report, which includes mobile phone market shipments for the third quarter of 2021. The report reveals that 331.2 million smartphones were shipped in the third quarter, down 6.7 percent year on year.

The announced results are even worse than analysts’ expectations for a 2.9 percent drop for the third quarter of 2021. The report cites global supply chain issues, component shortages and seasonal factors as the main reasons for the decline.

The raw material crisis also affected the smartphone industry

The announced report also states that regions such as Central Europe, Eastern Europe and the Asia-Pacific region (excluding Japan and China) saw the biggest declines, with 23.2 percent and 11.6 percent annually.

When we move to markets such as the United States, Western Europe and China, respectively; It saw an overall decline of 0.2 percent, 4.6 percent, and 4.4 percent. It is claimed that the reason for the decrease in these regions is that more value is given to those regions by the suppliers.

South Korean giant Samsung, covering 20.8 percent of the market share in the third quarter of this year; It continues to be the market leader with 69 million shipments. The company witnessed a 14.2 percent annual decline in the third quarter of 2021.

Apple ranks second with 50.4 million shipments and 15.2 percent market share. On the other hand, it recorded an annual increase of 20.8 percent. Chinese technology giant Xiaomi shipped 44.3 million units and achieved a 13.4% market share. But it fell 4.6 percent.

Vivo and OPPO with shipments of 33.3 million units and 33.2 million units respectively; ranked fourth with 10.1 percent and 10 percent market shares. At the end of the third quarter, Vivo’s shipments increased by 5.8 percent year-on-year; OPPO’s shipments increased by 8.6 percent year-on-year.

In the Chinese market, Vivo is the leader with a 23 percent market share; OPPO is in second place with a 20 percent market share. Honor and Xiaomi, with 15 percent and 14 percent market share respectively; ranks third and fourth.
