It has been learned that in line with a new patent discovered in the US Patent and Trademark Office, Japanese automotive company Toyota has developed a new type of paint. This type of paint developed is very similar to the vehicle wraps we already have.

Repairing paint damage could become easier with this new idea from Toyota
According to this patent document, the exterior paint layer of a car can be removed by simply peeling it off, leaving a new layer of paint where scratches occur. This can be especially useful for off-road vehicles like the Toyota Tundra or Land Cruiser.
The patent details a painting technique that follows current practice for the first few coats of paint: First a primer is applied, then a coat of paint in the car’s primary color is applied as the first coat. However, the painting process differs from this point on because the next coat of paint is different from the current topcoat application.
Much like vinyl siding, this paint layer has a material that is flexible enough to easily peel off the base color layer. Just like a professionally applied vinyl wrap, the peelable layer wraps around the edges of the vehicle’s body panels for a seamless finish.
The technique also allows for a clear coat to be applied over the first colored coating, followed by a layer (or multiple layers) of peel-off colored paint, each of which may have its own clear coat. What do you think about this system?
