Scientists have discovered a Jupiter-like “forbidden planet” about 285 light-years from our solar system. The newly discovered gas giant was discovered by astronomers using NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and is now known as TOI-5205b.

A planet found where it shouldn’t be

This exoplanet is quite similar to Jupiter, a gas giant in our Solar system, but with radical differences. As it is known, Jupiter completes one full revolution around the Sun in 12 years. However, this newly discovered planet orbits its own red dwarf star every three days and is only 285 light-years from us.

What’s even more interesting is how this planet formed is completely unclear, and that’s where the word “forbidden” comes from. This particular aspect of TOI-5205b has astronomers scratching their heads because current gas giant models suggest that the exoplanet cannot form around a low-mass star as it currently orbits. So, from what we know so far, such a planet shouldn’t exist, but it does.

Recent discoveries are testing what we think we know about our universe and how its various parts came to be. New discoveries made by the James Webb Space Telescope continue to challenge what scientists have believed for years. Therefore, the discovery of this forbidden planet is absolutely not incredible. Scientists will now try to examine this planet more closely and seek answers to the question of how it formed.

general information

M-dwarf stars, also known as red dwarfs, are typically less than half the mass of the Sun, and in this scenario the star that TOI-5205b orbits is 40 percent that of the Sun. Not only are red dwarfs smaller, they are also cooler. However, such stars are among the most common types of stars in galaxies and can last for trillions of years. For example, the Sun’s lifetime is believed to be roughly 10 billion years.
