Statcounter’s report for the month of February 2023 reveals the latest details about the browser market. It’s not a big change overall, but according to the data, Microsoft Edge is at risk of losing the title of “second most popular desktop browser” to Apple’s Safari.

Safari is on Edge’s neck

  • Google Chrome – 66.12% (-0.29)
  • Microsoft Edge – 10.84% (-0.24)
  • Apple Safari – 10.14% (+0.83)
  • Mozilla Firefox – 6.84% (-0.03)
  • Opera – 3.21% (-0.2)

Not surprisingly, the most popular browser was Google Chrome with 66.12 percent market share. Crushingly ahead of its competitors, Chrome was down just 0.29 from the previous month. Microsoft Edge, on the other hand, is second on the list with a market share of 10.84 percent, but Apple Safari is right behind it with a share of 10.14 percent. This is the first time Safari has come this close to Edge in almost a year.

Obviously, this data is more important than ever because Microsoft brought the new AI-based Chat feature to the Edge browser and Bing. We will see the fruits and effects of this in the next report. If Microsoft manages to take the wind behind it, it will be official that Google is late in this area.

On the mobile browser side, the situations are the same.

  • Google Chrome – 66.08% (-0.7)
  • Apple Safari – 23.97% (-0.45)
  • Samsung Internet – 4.37% (-0.09)
  • Opera – 1.71% (-0.06)
  • UC Browser – 1.46% (-0.01)

When we leave the desktop side behind and turn our eyes to the mobile browser market, we see that not much has changed. Google Chrome and Apple Safari dominate almost 90 percent of the market, with Samsung Internet, Opera, UC Browser and others sharing the rest.
