Is the idea of using brain cells in computers a reality? A team of US researchers will make the project, which looks like it came out of a science fiction movie, a reality. Using brain organoids (cells that perform the basic functions of an organ), researchers have revealed that it is possible to create a biocomputer.

Could the biocomputer be the next generation of supercomputers?

The latest study, carried out at Johns Hopkins University, aims to establish a connection between the human brain and computers. Researchers are examining the concept of “organoid intelligence,” which uses three-dimensional versions of brain cells to mimic the functions of an advanced brain.

According to the report, the aim of this project is to create a biocomputer with brain cells that perform basic cognitive functions such as memorization and learning. The team thinks that the human brain is much better at learning than silicon-based computers and is much more energy efficient.

According to Johns Hopkins researchers, constituent neurons in the brain can store higher amounts of information than silicon-based systems. Existing organoids contain about 50,000 brain cells. It was even stated that an existing brain cell culture has the ability to learn and play the game of pong.

But the team wants to expand the organoids to contain as many as 10 million brain cells to achieve the desired level of computing capability. Although the concept of “organoid intelligence” is still in its early stages, it is thought that biological computing could be used for neural disorders.

One of the challenges of this research is communicating with organoids to convey information and understand what cells are thinking. Researchers think that they can be used in more areas in the coming years and can be an alternative to supercomputers.
