So far we have always divided the layers of the Earth into four different groups: crust, mantle, outer core and inner core. However, recent studies have revealed that the inner core is also a layer within itself. Accordingly, the Earth has a fifth layer.
A new one may be added to the layers of the Earth
Seismologists try to learn about our planet by studying seismic waves. There has been a long-standing debate among scientists about whether there is a solid sphere of iron-nickel alloy in the inner core of the planet.
The seismologists from the Australian National University can end this debate with their latest work. According to studies, there is a metal sphere with a diameter of about 750 kilometers in the center of the core. Seismologists state that they reached this conclusion by watching the waves created by 200 different earthquakes.
Seismologists report that they monitor these waves using a new technology. Researchers can learn the material properties of different parts of the planet’s interior by watching the movement of the waves, depending on the material they are passing through.
This research may also illuminate the formation process of the Earth. Interpreting the inner core as a time capsule of Earth’s evolutionary history, scientists say that they can gain more insight into our planet’s past. The formation of two different layers in the inner core indicates two different time periods.
How the inner core, the central layer, is formed is not yet clear. Researchers think that there may have been a major event at the center of the planet that created major changes in the structure of the core.
These questions about the center of the Earth are expected to be answered in the coming years. So what do you think about the center of the Earth and its layers? You can share your views with us in the comments section.
