Can you find the 24 masks in the picture? There’s a reason these types of tasks are challenging even for experienced puzzle solvers. We cannot see everything within our field of view. In other words, our brain does not allow it.
Our brains focus on a limited number of things at once, says Susana Martinez-Conde, neuroscientist at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York. Neurons in our visual cortices have limited bandwidth. If they were trying to see every detail, we would have a hard time noticing the life-and-death details. That’s why the brain directs our vision and filters out unimportant objects.
If we are crossing the street, our feelings are directed at the speeding car towards us rather than a flying bird or a walking neighbor. Therefore, we may miss some details, but at least we are able to live to tell what we see.
To solve the puzzle above, we need to focus on the smaller parts of the picture, not the whole picture at once. Otherwise, our brains lock onto the largest parts of the picture, preventing us from seeing the details.
