The number of electronic devices on which Doom can be played is increasing day by day. We’ve seen Doom play on everything from tractors to Christmas trees and even Windows’ Notepad. And now James Brown’s Lego computer added to this list. Doom can be played on this tiny Lego computer, thanks to motion-sensitive parts and touch points.
If your interests or obsessions include both electronics and Lego, you’ve probably seen the work that James Brown, a graphic engineer at Weta Workshop, has posted on YouTube for the past eight months. It all started when Brown wondered if the Lego computer parts made popular by the classic ’80s Lego space series could be upgraded with functional screens showing animations and fake computer interfaces.
Brown was able to run a lightweight version of Doom on Lego computers months ago using the Raspberry Pi RP2040 microcontroller, and then a few weeks ago he produced a custom version of Doom that served as a testbed for small batteries that could help make Lego bricks self-contained and self-powered. .
The game was self-playing in demo mode at first, but in Brown’s latest video, we can see some impressive upgrades. Free of wires and no longer dependent on a big block of Lego with a 9-volt battery inside for power. Instead, the whole thing consists of a much smaller Lego piece attached to the bottom and another Lego piece containing the computer. Moreover, we see that Doom gains an accelerometer that allows it to be played just by tilting the brick in different directions, by touching the touch-sensitive protrusions on the top, gates can be breached and the player can fire his weapon.
