Competing against Qualcomm and Apple
As it is known, Qualcomm and Apple provide satellite communication services based on 5G chipset today. MediaTek, which plans to participate in this race, is preparing an independent chip that can be added to 4G or 5G phones. According to the shared information, the new chipset will support the 3GPP NTN (Non-Terrestrial Network) standard, which has been in our lives for a long time, unlike Qualcomm and Apple.
Another difference will be that MediaTek’s satellite chips will be connected to satellites in geosynchronous equatorial orbit rather than low-Earth orbit satellites. In this context, the chipmaker states that it will offer a full two-way messaging opportunity compared to Apple’s one-way emergency SOS texts.
The new chipset is expected to be available with Motorola defy 2, CAT S75 and defy bluetooth accessory. According to the statements, the new devices will be launched in North America, Latin America and Canada in the second quarter of 2023.
