Apple’s new MacBook Pro series with dazzling features has been released, but the notch on the screen has been the subject of much criticism. Apple used the notch for the first time on the iPhone X, with the goal of offering a phone with more screen area. When the notch was first introduced, it was a source of ridicule for Apple critics and even Samsung, who soon ran ads that made fun of the notch despite implementing a notch on their phones.
Now the notch in the new MacBook Pro series seems to have created a wave of criticism again. However, in an interview on the Same Brain podcast, Apple explained that with this design, it gives users a “smart way” to get more out of the screen. Shruti Haldea, Product Line Manager, and Luke Tristram, Senior Product Manager, Professional Video Applications, said they used the “notch” as a way to make the screen taller.
As with the previous 16-inch MacBook Pro, users will have an aspect ratio of 16:10 to work in full-screen mode or the default windowed mode. The notch is in the menu bar when not in full screen mode. That said, it’s not entirely clear how macOS will find a solution to make apps with menu bar items that normally use the location of the notch work properly.
