Google Fiber, Alphabet’s broadband Internet service, continues to grow, albeit slowly. The new 5 Gbps plan, which began testing in October last year, is now generally available.

Symmetric 5 Gbps move from Google

Google Fiber’s 5Gbps plan promises symmetrical download and upload speeds. Demanding a small price of $125 per month, the company will provide this service to Kansas, West Des Moines and Salt Lake regions for now. Those who want to buy this new package can optionally get a Wi-Fi 6 router, up to two network extenders, and professional support that upgrades homes to 10Gbps ready.

While 5Gbps speeds are overkill for most home users, they will come in handy for professionals, gamers and others who need minimal latency or need to transfer large files frequently. It will take only three or four minutes to download Microsoft Flight Simulator, which has a download speed of 5 Gb/s and a size of 150 GB.

Google Fiber remained silent for a while, and it was rumored that the company would cancel this service. But the upgraded speeds and the addition of new cities show Google’s refocus on Fiber. However, Google Fiber is not without its competitors. Companies like Frontier and Optimum offer 5Gbps internet speeds for $155 and $180 per month, respectively.
