A Minecraft user managed to add The Legend of Zelda to the game without using any third-party mods or resource packs. YouTuber C1OUS3R, who managed to add Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario Bros. to Minecraft, says it took about a month to prepare Zelda.

The developer used command blocks, custom textures, and other in-game features to integrate the 1986 NES classic into Minecraft. “I use Blockbench to create an all-round flat version of Link so I can rotate it to make it look like it’s looking in all directions,” C1OUS3R said in a build video. It would take a long time and I really don’t have time for that.”

“I then placed this model on top of a carved pumpkin, which is one of the items you can wear on your head in Minecraft. I then made the player invisible to make it look like you were controlling Link. Then, using the datapacks function folder, which are just command blocks in written form, the player’s I can detect which way it’s moving and I can rotate the model to make it look like it’s moving. Then I simply animate the textures and you have a controllable Link.”

C1OUS3R said that when their YouTube video gets 5,000 likes, they will release the playable part featuring the first boss fight. The video had over 500 likes at the time of its release. The developer says they eventually want to release an entire game engine within Minecraft: “It’s much easier to use this instead of something like Unity. I believe Minecraft can really help people get started with game development.”
