Samsung has dozens of phone models still in use. And the update status of these models can sometimes be confusing.

Below you can find answers to questions such as which Samsung phones receive regular updates, which are updated periodically, and which receive sporadic updates.

How are Samsung Galaxy phones updated?

There are three different update cycles that Samsung implements. New models like the Samsung Galaxy S22 get monthly security updates, older models like the Galaxy S10 are still updated quarterly, and the oldest devices only get sporadic security updates.

Three years after its release, Samsung is generally ending support for Galaxy devices. However, this period may increase in some flagship and new models.

Galaxy devices not getting updates

Older devices like the Samsung Galaxy S9, ie devices you don’t see in the listing above, are not getting any updates. This can pose a security risk if smartphones and tablets are no longer provided with updates. Without security updates, the device is no longer protected against malware and other malware.

The longer you use a device that does not receive the latest updates, the greater the risk of falling victim to attacks or data theft.

Also, device performance may degrade without updates.
