Former US President Donald Trump wants to run for president again in 2024 and thinks he needs to create another explosion on social media to attract public and media attention. And for this purpose, he recently said that he wanted to get his account back from Facebook.
Meanwhile, he has a “social media exclusivity” agreement with Truth Social, the platform he helped start from scratch. The agreement obliges Trump to send any social media post to Truth first.
Its presence on the platform is one of the major reasons Truth Social is still alive. However, he seems to want to give up on this project he started and to be present on Twitter and Facebook once again.
A report by Rolling Stone detailed the situation, citing two anonymous sources who were close enough to hear how Trump spoke about the Truth Social deal. One source said the former president said “it won’t be necessary”, citing the Truth Social deal. The other source says Trump “doesn’t want to make commitments.”
The news comes a week after NBC News reported, based on a leaked letter, that Trump’s campaign team had petitioned Facebook parent company Meta to unblock his account. Twitter under Elon Musk has already unbanned Trump’s account, although he has not yet actively reused it.
It seems unlikely that Trump will re-extend the exclusivity period with Truth Social, which was supposed to expire in June. According to Rolling Stone, the deal is renewed every six months unless the former president gives prior notice. Which could mean a lot of extra work for a guy known for tweeting around the clock or night.
