Tabs allow multiple files to be used in a single window. This functionality had previously come to Windows 11’s File Explorer. Thus, Notepad became the second built-in application to switch to the tabbed interface.
Microsoft has tested tabs before
“There are some improvements, such as automatically generating filename/tab title based on content, to manage unsaved files, as well as new keyboard shortcuts for tab management,” said Dave Grochocki, Microsoft’s chief product manager.
Microsoft first started testing tabs as part of the “Sets” feature five years ago. This would bring tab support to Notepad, File Explorer and many other applications in Windows 10, but the company eventually canceled the project.
