The SO-DIMM memory standard, which has been used in laptops for many years, is struggling to keep up with capacity and speed limits today. In the search for alternatives, the CAMM standard stands out.

Will CAMM memory be standard?

CAMM (Compression Attached Memory Module) memory modules developed by Dell and started to be used in workstations attracted the attention of the computer world. With the involvement of the JEDEC standard setting organization, the first step towards becoming a widespread platform was taken.

CAMM module technology is 57 percent thinner than traditional SODIMM designs and can accommodate up to 128GB of capacity at this thinness. In the CAMM module, multiple memory membranes are assembled on a single circuit board and the module is located on a single face. Memory capacities ranging from 16GB DDR5 to 128GB DDR5 are used.

Each board is connected to the motherboard via a CAMM compression connector. Again, each module has its own programmable memory circuit board. CAMM modules can also include SODIMM connections if standard connection is needed.

DDR5 SO-DIMMs can only go up to 6400MT/s, but CAMM modules will take that even further. In Dell’s first samples, 4800MHz frequencies were used. After these examples, which Dell calls version 0.5, the speeds will increase even more.

It is stated that 32 companies are involved in the development of CAMM modules and one of them is Apple. In other words, we will have the opportunity to see CAMM memory modules in many different laptop models besides Dell.
