According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is working on Macs with touchscreens. While it’s unclear whether the devices will actually hit the market, Gurman says in a tweet that we could see a touchscreen MacBook Pro in 2025.

Macs could come with touch OLED

The report also points out that the displays can use OLED technology, unlike the Mini LED displays currently available on 14- and 16-inch models. Note that current Macs have LCDs, while iPhones (except iPhone SE) and Apple Watches use OLED displays.

According to the report, the project, with engineers “actively involved”, appears to be in the relatively early stages. Gurman says there are no final plans to launch touchscreen Macs, and plans are always subject to change. On the other hand, when Steve Jobs announced the iPad, he criticized touchscreen computers, saying they were “awful in terms of ergonomics”. Of course, many years have passed and this is no longer the case today.

macOS needs overhaul

Instead of adding touchscreens to laptops, Apple introduced the Touch Bar feature for Macs from 2016 and began phasing out the feature with the release of redesigned 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros in 2021. In addition to all this, if MacBook Pros will have a touch screen, MacOS will have to go through a serious revision.
