According to a new claim spreading in the backdrop of technology, Apple is working on a new chip that will strengthen cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections in its devices and gather them all under one roof. Apple currently buys the chips it uses for these tasks from Broadcom, but it is stated that it wants to switch to its own chips by 2025.
Allegedly, Apple plans to manufacture its own cellular modems and stop buying modems from Qualcomm. Apple will switch to its own modems by the end of 2024 and 2025. In three years, it will start to use its own modems on all its devices.
If Apple puts these chips into production, it will have more additions to its growing number of custom chips, which already include things like the A-series system-on-chip series. The company bought the “majority” of Intel’s smartphone modem business in 2019, and Nikkei reported in 2021 that Apple wants to use its own 5G modem from 2023. But Qualcomm’s latest comments suggest that Apple won’t make the switch until 2024 at the earliest.
It’s unclear when a combined cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip might be included in an iPhone. Considering we can still wait a while for the on-premises cellular modem to arrive, we may have a long way to go.
