If you’ve been waiting for a new iPhone SE from Apple, this news may be a disappointment for you. The company has reportedly canceled development projects for this phone altogether.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the company recently told suppliers that it will not launch the fourth-generation SE model in 2024.

In a Medium post spotted by MacRumors, Kuo said that if presented, the device would be the first rollout of Apple’s first in-house 5G modem, adding that the company plans to test and tweak the chip in the SE before rolling it out more broadly to the iPhone 16 and later. . Instead, Kuo says, Apple is now more likely to continue using Qualcomm modems through 2024. Kuo has no idea why Apple shelved the fourth-generation iPhone SE or whether the performance of its own 5G chip had anything to do with the decision.

Apple has spent much of the past decade trying to reduce its reliance on Qualcomm. In 2019, the duo settled a fierce patent litigation and signed a “multi-year” wireless chip supply agreement. But months later, Apple bought most of Intel’s mobile modem business. Then, at the end of 2020, the company announced that it was working on its own cellular chipset. Since then, little news has surfaced about the project.
