If you’ve been waiting for a more powerful version of the Nintendo Switch to be introduced and hit the shelves, wait no longer. Because Nintendo has reportedly canceled plans to produce a Switch Pro.
According to video game reporter John Linneman, the Switch Pro was at one point an actual Nintendo project. But after some internal discussion, the company has decided to divert its efforts to a Switch Pro to a next-gen console.
“From conversations I’ve had with different developers, a more powerful Switch was planned internally at some point, but that doesn’t seem to happen anymore. And so it’s pretty clear what they’re going to do next is a true next-gen console,” Linneman says.
Nintendo players have been wondering for years if the company will release a more capable version of its beloved console. The Switch has naturally been a bit outdated since its 2017 release. It can’t deliver 4K graphics at 60 frames per second like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X, which means it’s lagging behind graphically.
In fact, Nintendo had updated its console by releasing an OLED version of the Switch in 2021. But while doing this, it just changed the screen to OLED, without any performance upgrade. And now it looks like the company is working on a real next-gen console instead of a more powerful Switch.
According to Linneman, the next-generation console could hit the shelves next year. The console is expected to use the Nvidia T239 chip and include new graphics features such as ray tracing.
