Citing multiple analysts and experts, the report from Business Next reveals that TSMC is significantly better than Samsung Foundry in efficiency on the 3nm process. According to the report, TSMC’s 3nm chips can be used in products, but Samsung still has a long way to go.
TSMC is way ahead of Samsung in efficiency
It actually switched to Samsung Foundry’s high-volume 3GAE (3nm, Gate All Around) chip manufacturing and sampling a few months earlier than TSMC. However, the company still has not achieved the desired efficiency. So much so that during the intervening months, Samsung’s 3nm efficiency is still claimed to be between 10 percent and 20 percent. On the other hand, information from TSMC shows that the semiconductor giant is at 60 to 80 percent efficiency in the N3 (3nm) process. In fact, it is said that the same level of performance can be achieved with 5nm when TSMC’s gains in the 3m process are combined with 80 percent efficiency. But we have to say that there is an important factor that should not be ignored. These efficiency levels have not been approved by either Samsung or TSMC. The report claims that Samsung hasn’t made any progress for months, but this is highly unlikely.
On the other hand, Apple will be the biggest and first customer of TSMC’s 3nm process. In addition, TSMC will switch to a more stable and efficient N3E production process in late 2023. Efficiency and performance gains will be increased once again by switching to more advanced N3P technology. Samsung has a similar roadmap and we may see new information coming from them in the near future.
