Roland Quandt, one of the reliable sources of information in the mobile industry, said that Qualcomm may reduce its investments in lower and mid-range chipsets for smartphones. This is attributed to the decline in the market as a whole.
While talking about the segments in question, Quandt says that at the moment there is only data about the SM4450 chipset, which is expected to be the successor of Snapdragon 4 Gen 1. This will most likely be the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 anyway.
MediaTek dominates the low and middle class
Given MediaTek’s dominance in precisely these segments, Qualcomm may focus on more expensive and high-performance solutions where its position has always been quite strong. This will negatively affect the end user.
It seems that Qualcomm’s move towards high-end mobile processors will result in less competition in the lower segments and therefore less choice for consumers. We will see together how the sector will take shape in the future.
