The long-awaited mass production of chips with 3 nanometer technology started today by TSMC, the world’s largest chip manufacturer. TSMC President Mark Liu, in his speech at a ceremony held on the occasion of production and capacity increase in Tainan city in southern Taiwan, stated that they have started mass production and will continue to increase capacity.

Liu declined to elaborate while emphasizing the importance of demand for the company’s 3-nanometer chip for new products, including 5G and high-performance computing products. Noting that mass production is successful and yields good yields, Liu added that the new 3 nanometer technology will create final products with a market value of $1.5 trillion within five years.

Earlier this month, TSMC announced it would put up $40 billion for its new Arizona facility, one of the largest foreign investments in US history. While Apple and Nvidia are among the main customers of TSMC, the first company to buy 3nm chips will be Apple. On the other hand, TSMC is establishing a chip factory in Japan and negotiations are underway to establish a potential facility in Germany.

TSMC’s roadmap is ready

TSMC will limit N3 production to 3nm before moving to a more stable and efficient N3E production process in late 2023. In 2024, the company will switch to more advanced N3P technology and increase efficiency at 3nm once again. Again in 2024, TSMC is expected to take the first tangible steps in the 2nm GAA process and start sample production in 2025.

TSMC’s biggest rival, Samsung, started 3nm semiconductor production in June and is in preparation for a more energy efficient 3nm for 2024. However, according to the reports, Samsung has not been able to achieve the expected efficiency for now. It will enter the competition by switching to the 20A “Angstrom” process planned for 2024 at Intel.
