At the press conference held in Thailand, Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda stated that the automobile industry should not be based only on electricity. He said a number of technologies must be developed simultaneously, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, hydrogen vehicles and electric vehicles.
While many major automakers such as Tesla, Mercedes and Volkswagen are committed to an all-electric future, the same cannot be said for Toyota. In fact, according to the CEO, many important people in the auto industry remain silent on this issue.
“This silent majority is wondering if it’s okay for electric cars to be the only option,” Toyoda said in a statement. But they think it’s fashionable, so they can’t speak loudly. “The correct answer is still unclear, we should not limit ourselves to one option,” he said.
Toyoda noted that the real enemy in the pursuit of carbon neutrality is carbon itself, rather than a specific powertrain. He also argued that electric cars are not the only way to achieve this goal.
