The law was passed for TikTok, the short video platform that has become the subject of discussion in the USA in recent months. The US Congress has officially banned the use of TikTok on the devices of users affiliated with the federal government. Allegedly, parent company Chinese ByteDance has been tracking federal employees for a while.

State employees will not be able to use TikTok in the USA

The latest TikTok campaign, run by US Senator Josh Hawley, received a positive response from Congress. The “No TikTok on Government Devices” Act was passed for fiscal year 2023. The law, which was included in the $1.7 trillion government funding bill, blocks the use of TikTok in government agencies in the United States.

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, admitted some time ago that its employees were spying on it. Some company employees leaked audio recordings of various journalists and a small group linked to their private information. Employees who spied on were fired from the company.

The No TikTok on Government Devices Act tries to reduce the possible risks of the application. According to Senator Hawley’s statement, TikTok will be blocked from downloading or accessing through any federally granted device or network.

The law, which aims to completely ban TikTok within the borders of the USA, was recently presented to the congress. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp blocked state employees from using TikTok due to security concerns.

As it is known, there is a great debate about the transparency of social media platforms. Previously, TikTok partnered with Oracle, one of the world’s largest software companies, to review its algorithms and content moderation system.
