FBI recommends ad blockers
The FBI recently issued a public notice urging attention to scammers faking ads. The FBI recommends that users use an ad blocker to protect themselves so that fake ads (along with real ads) don’t appear.
It must have caught your attention, the first few sites in a Google search consist of “ads”. This poses a security vulnerability, as we have seen from time to time that the sites here are actually fake versions of the original site.
Hackers can buy ads that lead to sites that mimic real businesses or brands, or they can use good search engine optimization to make their fraudulent sites appear high in search results. In this way, financial information theft can be done or the system can be infected by installing fake applications. The FBI underlines that users should be very careful in such cases.
Despite the increased security that ad blockers can provide, Google, which derives most of its revenue from ads, was planning to remove these add-ons from its Chrome browser. However, this seems to be suspended for now.
