Netflix, the world’s largest video streaming service, wasn’t actually a streaming service when it was first established. Instead, it started out by mailing DVDs to customers. It now consumes more than 15 percent of the world’s internet bandwidth and has subscribers in more than 190 countries.

How Netflix was set up; Who is the founder?

It went through a long period of trial and error in the process of achieving this success. Netflix was founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in a small California city called Scotts Valley in Santa Cruz County. Reed Hastings says the idea stems from the $40 fine he received for renting the Apollo 13 movie from the now long-closed BlockBuster and returning it six weeks late. One day, while working out at the gym, the pain of his fine led him to open a service that allows ordering movies online and receiving them by mail.

However, according to Marc Randolph, this story is not true and was just a marketing joke. Instead, in early 1997 Reed was CEO of the company they worked for (Pure Atria) and Marc was Vice President of Corporate Marketing. Because an upcoming merger with another company would put them both out of business, Marc says Reed told him, “Let’s come up with an idea and you can run it and I’ll finance it.”

Wanting to start something like Amazon.com, Marc presented Reed with many different e-commerce ideas as they drove from their Santa Cruz home to Silicon Valley together every day: Surfboards, custom baseball bats, personalized dog food, and home delivery shampoo. Reed’s response to all of them was simply “this will never work”.

Later, Marc heard that there was a new and remarkable product called DVD, which was invented in Japan.

He realized that DVDs would soon replace VHS tapes as the standard for home viewing. After brainstorming for a while along the way, Reed loved the idea, too.

On a hot summer day in 1997, Marc and Reed broke into Logos Books & Records in Santa Cruz, bought a CD of Patsy Cline’s greatest hits and mailed it to Reed’s house a few blocks from town. Once the CD was in good hands, they knew they had found the victory ticket for e-commerce.

When was Netflix founded?

On August 29, 1997, the Netflix brand was registered and Reed Hastings invested at least $1.9 million. Other investors later rounded up this capital. Reed Hastings, 37, became chairman with a 70% stake, and Marc Randolph, 39, became CEO and minority shareholder.

After several iterations in its first few years, Netflix finally built a successful business model: a subscription-based rental service with no deadlines or late fees and access to unlimited content for $19.95. There was also a “Queue” that subscribers used to determine the order in which DVDs should be mailed to them, and a delivery system that automatically mailed the DVD as soon as the previous DVD was returned.

At first, Netflix put DVDs in white envelopes and in 2000 changed them to yellow envelopes. But it took only a year for the company to switch to the now-recognized iconic red envelopes. The DVDs were delivered in a slim package with a postage-paid return cover, and Netflix paid for all postage.

This formula has been very successful and Netflix has steadily gained subscribers. Within five years of its founding, Netflix has shipped millions of DVDs every day. In 2002, he opened local warehouses and stepped up efforts to get DVDs to members in one day.

In 2003, Marc Randolp left Netflix and sold his shares.

In 2006, Netflix became truly profitable, reporting $80 million in revenue and reaching 6.3 million members. When we arrived in 2007, Netflix started streaming content and started broadcasting content directly to televisions, computers and tablets with the Watch Now service. Initial trials began in Canada, and the service, which has 1,000 movies, included a DVD subscription plan within its $5.99 monthly subscription fee. In 2010, the company focus shifted to the streaming service and the service was expanded to the US. That same year, Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy.

In 2012, Netflix started producing its own original series, and many of these series have achieved great success. In 2015, Netflix expanded to more than 50 countries, and in 2016, the Netflix streaming service launched in 130 countries simultaneously, adding a user interface, subtitles and dubbing in local languages.

Netflix offers a rich catalog almost everywhere in the world today.

With 209 million members in more than 190 countries in 2021, Netflix reported over $25 billion in annual revenue and started offering games that users can play on Netflix.

In 2022, the service reported loss of users for the first time in over a decade, losing 200,000 members in the first quarter.

Netflix continues to aggressively create original content for local audiences. Over the years, the company has gained competitors such as Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, Prime Video, HBO Max, and YouTube TV. These competitors invest heavily in different ways to entertain their audience.
