US-based technology giant Google has developed a new feature for the Android ecosystem. As of now, this new feature, which has reached Google’s Pixel branded phones, ensures that a user who turns on airplane mode does not disconnect from Wi-Fi.

Android users know; When the phone is in airplane mode, both cellular and Wi-Fi connections are turned off. Cellular connection is not possible as mobile service is not working. However, Wi-Fi can be turned on manually. With the newly developed feature, there will be no need to manually activate Wi-Fi. The operating system will be able to do this automatically according to the user’s preference.

It will be left to the users’ choice!

Google Pixel users, who received a notification with the launch of the feature, decided for themselves how Wi-Fi should behave when they activate the airplane mode. Users who wished preferred Wi-Fi to be turned off as well, and those who wished preferred Wi-Fi to remain on.

The new feature developed by Google for the Android ecosystem will not be exclusive to Google Pixel. In other words, all brands such as Samsung, Oppo or Vivo will be able to integrate this feature into their own interfaces. But we don’t know when that will happen. Let me also point out; Since Android 11, there is a feature that allows the Bluetooth connection to remain on when airplane mode is turned on. However, many brands other than Google Pixel do not actively use this feature.

So, if the Wi-Fi is on while in airplane mode, will we endanger the plane we’re on?

Whether the phone we use is Android or iOS, there is no harm in using Wi-Fi on the plane. Some airlines even offer Wi-Fi service on their planes. As a matter of fact, even if the airplane mode is turned on, there is no great risk for airplanes. So much so that no plane crash has occurred due to airplane mode.

If so, why do we activate airplane mode when boarding a plane?

With all this, the airplane mode requirement is already slowly becoming a thing of the past!

The European Union took a decision a few days ago and removed the airplane mode requirement. According to the decision taken, if consumers have a phone that supports 5G connection and the mobile operator also supports 5G, the phone will not need to be put in airplane mode. You can find all the details about the decision made on our news here.
