Google searches are changing: Continuous scrolling will reduce the importance of being on the first page

Instead of dividing the search results into pages in their mobile versions for a while, Google started to list them with the continuous scrolling feature that we are used to from social media platforms. The feature, which came to mobile devices last October, is now coming to desktop, and the page numbers at the bottom of the search result page are a thing of the past.

Thanks to this change by Google, six pages of search results will be listed first. When you scroll down, new results will appear on the screen. A “See more” button will be displayed after the six pages of results are finished.

Google says the change was first made available for searches in the US and English, but considering the feature’s rollout on mobile devices, it seems like this feature will be available to everyone in the future.

Goodbye to page numbers

Thus, the “Next” button and page numbers that have been on Google’s search results page for years will be eliminated. “Starting today, we’re bringing continuous scrolling to the desktop so you can continue to see more useful search results with fewer clicks. It’s even easier to get inspired with more information at your fingertips,” the statement said.

Technically, this feature will make searching faster and less important for websites to appear on the first page of search results. However, it will still be very important to still rank high in searches, as research shows that the first few pages get the majority of clicks.
