Having accomplished successful works in the market with Pixel series smartphones, Google will soon launch a new feature that will delight device owners. The software giant will significantly shorten download times for OTA (Over the Air) updates available to Pixel devices.

Pixel series phones will update faster

Reportedly, Google is working to speed up the loading times of OTA updates with a compression mechanism. Testing this change, shared for the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), on the Pixel 6 Pro, Android Police and Mishall Rahman discovered that the time required to install a 2.2GB OTA update was reduced by 43 percent, taking just 10 minutes.

In addition, the new change reduces the installation time of a small update of 376MB from 22 minutes to 16 minutes. We can say that this indicates a decrease of 27 percent.

Google first rolled out Seamless Updates for Android in 2016 with Android 7.0 Nougat. This feature enabled OTA updates to be installed on an inactive part of the device, while allowing device usage during the update. In the new change, since the inactive partition is replaced with the active partition, it will require users to restart their devices.

In addition, Google made several improvements to virtual A/B partitions in Android 13, reducing snapshot size by 15 percent and defragmentation times by up to 40 percent. These improvements to the process aim to further speed up the OTA installation.
