Starlink service, which SpaceX provides internet from space, attracts great attention. Starlink, which is preparing to expand its usage area, aims to expand its satellite network in line with this purpose. SpaceX has finally obtained the necessary permits to increase the number of satellites.

More Starlink orbits than total active satellites

With the decision taken by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the number of functional satellites in orbit will more than double. Accordingly, 7,500 more satellites will be added to the company’s vehicles operating in low Earth orbit.

SpaceX initially applied for 29,998 satellites to launch into space. The FCC has approved a quarter of this figure for the first phase. The institution, which allowed SpaceX to use Ku and Ka band frequencies, refused the company’s E band frequency use request.

According to a report shared on April 30, 2022, there were 5,465 operational satellites in Earth orbit. In addition to these satellites belonging to all companies and countries, a thousand Starlink satellites were added during this process. The addition of Starlink Gen2 satellites will greatly increase the total number.

In recent years, many scientific organizations have expressed concerns that the high number of satellites in low Earth orbit could interfere with astronomical observations, as well as pose a potential threat to operations in orbit for astronauts and other satellites. However, with the decision taken, the number of satellites in orbit will have more than doubled.

The fact that such a large number of new devices will be added to the satellites currently active in orbit has led to a renewed discussion of Elon Musk and SpaceX. So what do you think about the 7,500 satellites SpaceX will send into space? You can share your views with us in the comments section.
