Even though it is a long time like 10 months before we get the new iPhone series iPhone 15, new information about the series continues to come every day. The new series, which appeared to have no sharp edges in the past days, came to the fore with another big news today.

According to the news shared by Nikkei Asia, Apple will partner with Sony on the camera of the new iPhone series. With this partnership, the iPhone 15 series will feature Sony’s latest and most powerful image sensor.

Sony will also offer its new image sensor to other phone manufacturers:

The new image sensor that Sony is developing will not be just a sensor for Apple. Sony will sell the sensor to other smartphone manufacturers after manufacturing the sensor at its facility in Nagasaki.

Well what does it mean? Sony will replace Samsung for Apple:

Apple supplies the image sensors it uses in its cameras from other technology companies and sensor manufacturers, including Samsung. But the fact that Apple will agree to Sony indicates that Apple can say goodbye to Samsung in image sensors.

So what is the importance of this new sensor, what will it offer users?

  • CMOS image sensor with two-layer transistor pixel technology introduced by Sony in 2021.

Sony will produce its new image sensor, which it will present to Apple, with CMOS technology, which it currently holds the market leadership. Sony broke new ground in this technology last year and started to offer the world’s first two-layer transistor pixel technology.

In Sony’s sensor last year, the circuitry put pixel transistors and photodiodes together layer by layer. This new fabrication technique, unlike traditional CMOS, contained pixel transistors and photodiodes in different layers.

Sony’s sensor in 2021 thus significantly reduced noise in night shots, enabling higher dynamic range to be offered. Therefore, it was possible to take pictures of much higher quality, which look extremely clear even in low light.

There is no information yet about the image sensor that will be included in Sony’s new iPhone series, which will be released in 2023. But we can expect this sensor to be an enhanced version of last year’s revolutionary sensor.
