Iranian state media wants the US Football Federation to be kicked out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and banned from 10 matches for supporting the protesters by temporarily changing the Iranian flag on its social media account.
The US Football Federation announced to various news sources that it had decided to change Iran’s official flag to support women fighting for basic human rights in Iran before their Group B match with Iran, and it did so. People protest human rights violations in Iran after a 22-year-old woman was killed in custody by the “morality police” for allegedly wearing an “inappropriate” headscarf.
Iran’s Tasnim News Agency called for the ban of Team USA in a Twitter post, saying, “The US football team violated @FIFAcom statutes by posting a distorted image of the #Islamic Republic of Iran flag on its official account. For this, a 10-game suspension would be the appropriate punishment.”
The FIFA Code of Ethics says that violators of the code of conduct can face a range of sanctions, including reprimands, fines, compliance training, refunds of prizes, ban from locker rooms or stadiums, and a ban on matches. However, FIFA is not expected to ban the USA from the tournament.
