IndieWire Picks Best of Fall Film Festivals

As those who are interested in cinema will know, autumn months are the months when film festivals are the most lively. Along with the film festivals held one after another, many directors, mostly art films, present their films to the audience and critics.

IndieWire, known as one of the most respected cinema publications; It commissioned 137 film critics to evaluate the productions shown at the fall film festivals. The critics, who chose the best films from Venice, Telluride, Toronto and New York film festivals, were also asked about their favorite films among all festivals and their favorite films in each festival.

Critics’ selection differs from awards given at festivals

The name that came to the top as a result of the survey was Jane Campion, directed by the majority of votes, and ‘The Power of the Dog’, starring Benedict Cumberbatch. According to critics, director Campion fully deserves the title of “Best Director”.

However, the critics’ selection is somewhat different from the awards handed out at the festival. Although Campion returned with the ‘Best Director’ award from the Venice Film Festival with The Power of the Dog; The most prestigious award of the festival, the Golden Lion, was won by the French drama ‘L’Evénement’ (Abortion). The People’s Choice award, presented at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF), went to Belfast. These films, which returned with awards from festivals, could not find a place for themselves in the list made by IndiWire’s critics. Telluride critics similarly preferred ‘C’mon C’mon’ starring Joaquin Phoenix to The Power of the Dog. The Power of the Dog and Verdens verste menneske (Worst Person in the World) shared the title of best film at the New York film festival.
