The battery energy storage system installed in the East Yorkshire, Cottingham region of England is recorded as the largest in Europe. It is aimed that the established facility will provide electricity to 300,000 homes in total. Established by Harmony Energy Limited, the facility was put into service four months earlier than planned, in case the UK has a potential energy problem.

It can power 300,000 homes.

Tesla Megapack technology is used in the facility established by Harmony Energy Limited. The system can store electricity at 196 megawatt-hours in a single cycle. The facility is planned to balance the energy grid while also facilitating the replacement of fossil fuel sources with renewable energy sources such as solar farms and wind turbines.

Each Tesla Megapack in the facility can store more than 3 MWh, or enough energy to power an average of 3,600 homes for one hour. It was not disclosed how many of these giant batteries were used at the Harmony facility, but with simple math, we can assume that 55-65 Megapacks were used. On the other hand, Harmony was aiming for the first leg of the project to be operational in December 2022 and the full capacity state in March 2023. However, due to a tough winter season, it was decided to bring the facility online early.

Behind the scenes of the harsh winter that Britain is waiting for is the war between Russia and Ukraine. Between 40 and 60 percent of the UK’s electricity is produced from gas-based plants, and the bulk of its gas comes from Russia. Therefore, there is a risk of experiencing a problem throughout the winter in this area. In addition to all these, Harmony aims to realize six more similar projects in the coming years.
