Elon Musk, who made radical changes on the platform after purchasing Twitter, became the subject of review in Germany. According to a law in Germany, social media platforms have to take snap decisions for allegations of hate speech. However, Elon Musk and Twitter are thought to be reckless in this regard.
Elon Musk’s Twitter management under scrutiny in Germany
Before buying Twitter, Elon Musk, who said that he would make various changes on the platform for freedom of expression and declared himself as an “absolutist of freedom of speech”, may be breaking some of Germany’s laws. The European country, which considers hate speech on the Internet illegal, requires that such speech be removed from the platform.
The law, called NetzDG, which examines social media practices in Germany, contradicts the way Elon Musk manages Twitter. Musk, who has dismissed thousands of employees in the past days and said that Twitter 2.0 has made the transition to difficult working conditions, is criticized for opening the accounts of names such as former US President Trump.
A German law firm, JunIT Rechtsanwälte, said Twitter’s new administration will be reviewed and a first hearing will take place on Thursday. It will also be checked how much Twitter pays attention to hate speech reports and whether it complies with NetzDG.
It seems likely that Twitter will face a fine of up to 50 million euros after the trial. However, if Elon Musk’s way of managing social media is deemed dangerous in terms of hate speech, there is a possibility that Twitter will be banned in Germany.
Elon Musk, on the other hand, ignores all these events and continues to make humorous posts on Twitter. “The new Twitter policy is freedom of speech, but not freedom of access. “You won’t find the tweet, which is no different from the rest of the internet unless you specifically search for it,” he said.
