The biggest problem in the construction of large wind turbines in difficult to reach locations is logistics activities. Because taking the towers to the location where they will be erected is a big cost problem in itself. Modvion, the technology leader in this field, builds wooden towers for wind turbines instead of steel towers.

The collaboration between Modvion and RES, the world’s largest independent renewable energy company, makes it easier for wooden wind turbine towers to enter our lives. Within the scope of the agreement, RES will introduce Modvion’s modular, laminated wood towers in projects in Scandinavian countries.

To be used from 2026

Under the agreement, it is foreseen to supply about 20 towers per year for ten years from 2026. Therefore, the approximate value of the project is 353 million dollars. Backed by wind OEM giant Vestas, Modvion is seeking to commercialize lightweight, easy-to-carry towers that it hopes will be a viable alternative to steel. Linking with RES could also lead to potential rapprochement with industry heavyweights Vattenfall and Enel.

Matilda Afzelius, CEO of RES at Nordics, said: “We need to build taller turbines to produce the most cost-efficient wind power. This is where Modvion’s solution becomes very interesting. Being able to reduce emissions by reaching stronger winds at an altitude of 290 meters is a proposal that we want to include in our projects as soon as possible.”

Wooden towers also raise some concerns. For example, fire and service life. Modvion states that their wooden towers are covered with a water and moisture-proof paint and the lifespan of the tower they produce is 25-30 years. Which is more than the lifetime of the mechanical parts of the wind turbine.
