It is almost time for the introduction of artificial chicken meat produced in the laboratory. Last week, a first happened and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a ‘cultured meat’ produced in a laboratory environment.

The artificial meat in question, produced by the company named Upside, founded by a former cardiologist, Uma Valeti, and of which he is the CEO, imitates chicken meat; contains similar nutritional values and can be used in dishes just like real chicken meat. According to the CEO’s statement, its taste is like real chicken meat!

Uma Valeti founded Upside, a ‘cultured meat growing company’, in California in 2015. The scientists working in the company achieved their goal in 2022, after a 7-year research and development process, and they succeeded in producing meat in the laboratory without killing any animals, only by taking their cells with needle biopsy.

Scientists feed the animal cells they take with needle biopsy with substances with high nutritional value, allowing them to multiply. As the cells multiply, they turn into ‘cultured meat’.

Only one obstacle remains for the sale of artificial meat, which can be produced more than 22 tons per year:

Although the FDA has now determined that this cultured meat is edible, Upside still faces several hurdles before this type of meat can be sold and used in restaurants or grocery stores in the US.

However, Upside, according to its statement, will be able to produce 22,679 kilos of cultured meat per year after obtaining legal approval for its cultured meats to go on sale.

What will the price and taste of meat produced by Upside be?

CEO Valeti said in an interview with NPR that he will set competitive labels with current real meat prices, which indicates that the artificial meat in question will be as much cheaper as possible. Also, talking about the taste of the meat, Valeti states that they work specifically for this and that the taste will surprise many people with the ideal quality of chicken meat.

Proponents of lab-grown meat say it will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight global warming. What are you thinking? Please do not forget to share your thoughts with us in the comments.
