Qualcomm has announced its new flagship mobile chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. In addition to making its new processor more powerful and efficient than Gen 1 chips, Qualcomm says it has made more artificial intelligence improvements to the new platform.

According to the company’s claim, the Snapdragon 8 will leverage the latest Qualcomm AI Engine and an upgraded Hexagon processor to deliver “faster natural language processing with multilingual translation and advanced AI camera features.”

Snapdragon 8 Gen2 features architectural upgrades that will deliver up to 4.35x the AI performance of Gen 1 chips. Supporting an AI precision format called Int4, the new processor will provide a 60 percent performance/watt improvement over the previous generation chipset for continuous AI extraction of this format.

Better Camera Phones on the Way

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 also has improvements in camera. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will automatically and in real time enhance photos and videos using semantic segmentation, while leveraging artificial intelligence neural networks to individually automate elements such as face, hair, clothing and sky. It was also announced that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will be the first Snapdragon model to feature the AV1 codec that supports 8K HDR playback at up to 60 frames per second.

It Will Offer Ray Tracing Feature in Games

The new processor has one interesting feature for mobile gamers: Qualcomm says it will have real-time hardware-accelerated ray tracing that will improve visuals in supported games. The company claims that the latest Adreno GPU and Kyro CPU deliver 25 percent faster performance and 40 percent more power efficiency than its predecessor, the Gen 1 chip.

There are also innovations on the connectivity front. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will use artificial intelligence to manage 5G download speeds, latency, coverage and power efficiency. There will be support for WiFi 7 (with speeds up to 5.8 Gbps) as well as dual 5G SIMs.

When Will Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Coming?

Qualcomm states that the first phones with the Gen 2 chipset should be available by the end of the year. The company also says that partners such as ASUS Republic of Gamers, Honor, Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, Sharp, Sony, Xiaomi and ZTE are planning to use Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 on their devices.
