The climate crisis stands before us as a painful reality and an approaching disaster that we cannot take into account. While the world and people are reluctantly heading towards climate disaster, individuals and societies, companies and institutions show promise in raising awareness about the climate crisis. Especially in technology and production, emission-free systems are of great importance in this direction.

Swedish automaker Volvo announced last month that its range of vehicles will be skinless and vegan-friendly by 2030, and will increasingly use sustainably sourced products. Volvo has also stated that it aims to use recycled polyester to reduce its carbon footprint, and to use flax from Swedish-grown flax plants that regenerate the soil. Standing out with its environmentally conscious innovations, the company introduced the world’s first vehicle made from SSAB’s fossil-free steel.

“An important step on the road to climate-neutral transport systems”

In the first quarter of this year, Volvo and SSAB signed a cooperation agreement on the research, development, mass production and commercialization of the world’s first vehicles made of fossil fuel-free steel, and Volvo planned to start production of concept vehicles and parts from SSAB’s hydrogen-produced steel this year. “We are determined to be a climate neutral company by 2050 in line with the Paris Agreement,” said Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO of Volvo Group. This agreement is an important step on the road to fully climate-neutral transport systems.”

This deal bore its first fruit, and Volvo introduced the world’s first vehicle made from SSAB fossil-free steel. Made of fossil-free steel with exactly the same properties as standard steel, the load-bearing vehicle was introduced at the green steel cooperation event in Gothenburg, hosted by Volvo Group President and CEO Martin Lundstedt. “Volvo Group is committed to pioneering partnerships like this with SSAB to develop attractive, safe and efficient new vehicles and machinery that paves the way for a more sustainable transport and infrastructure system adopted for the future,” Lundstedt said at the event.
