Last year, Facebook announced its plans for the future by changing its name to Meta. Although the crypto exchange and NFT projects have been on the rise with the change of the company’s name, the crash of the crypto exchange in recent months, the decrease in interest in NFTs and the lack of success of virtual projects have reduced the belief in both the company and the general metaverse market. The famous economics and business magazine The Wall Street Journal met with the officials of technology companies to talk about the future of the concept.

Criticism from Spencer to the metaverse

One of the officials WSJ talked to was Xbox’s President Phil Spencer. Asked for his opinion on the subject, Spencer described the metaverse as a poorly designed video game. Later, Spencer noted that game makers already have an incredible ability to build compelling worlds, and he doesn’t want to spend time in a metaverse that looks like a “meeting room.”

Many names made similar criticisms during the WSJ’s interviews. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel likened the metaverse to living inside a computer and stated that the last thing he would want to do when he gets home after work is to live inside a computer. Apple and Disney officials stated that they do not want to use the word “metaverse”. You can find the interviews WSJ had with other names below.

Despite his comments, Spencer believes the concept will change and evolve in the future. “I’m a little sarcastic when I say it’s a bad video game. I just think it’s sooner,” said Spencer, adding that the concept will look like video games in the future. What do you think about the metaverse, which caused great controversy?
