Technology giant Intel has announced the next generation Thunderbolt based on USB4 v2 and DisplayPort 2.1 features. This transfer technology, referred to as “next generation Thunderbolt” for now, will support the 120GB/s capacity of USB4 v2.

Next-generation Thunderbolt, the fifth Thunderbolt version ever; It offers the opportunity to transfer high resolution displays, external graphics cards and more with a single cable. Aimed specifically at content creators and gamers, the new stream is based on USB4 v2 and DisplayPort 2.1.

USB4 v2 doubles the available bandwidth while keeping the same port and cable structure. This means it can support current 40Gbps USB4 transfer up to 80Gbps. It also offers data transfer up to 120GB for files.

Especially useful for multi-display connection, the next-generation Thunderbolt will be able to divide the 120Gb/s transmission rate into four displays with 40Gb/s each. This is a pretty important innovation to power an 8K display. Let me remind you that it will continue to use the USB-C port.

Intel’s new technology is based on USB4 v2 specifications. On top of that, it will also be power efficient, thanks to its integration with Intel’s laptop processors. We know that Thunderbolt 3/4 supports up to 15W, but details about the next generation are not clear.
