Speaking at the MilSat symposium in California, Derek Tournear, Director of the US Space Forces Space Development Agency, said that some of Amazon’s future Kuiper constellation satellites will be equipped with US Department of Defense compatible laser communication terminals.

To remind you briefly, Amazon established its Kuiper division in 2019 to build a satellite constellation of the same name. The American e-commerce giant plans to use these satellites to provide broadband internet access service.

$10 billion launch deal

The total number of satellites in the constellation is expected to exceed 3,000. Amazon has already signed launch contracts with three service providers. The total cost of upcoming launches exceeds 10 billion dollars.

The senior executive of the US Space Force said that these satellites will also be used by the US military. To this end, Amazon will install special terminals on some satellites to quickly transfer data to military forces around the world.
