According to the news of The Elec, Kim Min-woo, the leader of the Samsung Display group, announced that the company has developed a new display technology for MicroLED-based AR headsets. The new technology, called MicroLed (LEDoS) on silicon, aims to bring the brightness and pixel density of AR heads to the next level.

What will LEDoS technology offer?

As it is known, AR (Augmented Reality) technology, which integrates virtual objects with the real world, needs a high screen brightness and pixel density due to strong ambient lighting. At this point, LEDoS technology, which will enable existing images to be processed on a glass substrate instead of typically silicon, aims to increase the screen pixel density up to 6.6000 PPI, according to Kim Min-woo. We can say that the shared value is far beyond the current screens.

In the continuation of his explanations, stating that the minimum pixel density for AR displays is 5,000 ppi, Kim said that “the overall distance between the pixels should be 5 micrometers, and the red, green and blue subpixel distance should be 3 micrometers or less.”

Also, Samsung plans to make MicroLED displays brighter for AR technology. The company reported that in addition to LEDoS, it is also working on OLED-based (OLEDoS) panels. Although no date information has been shared about the newly developed panels from the Samsung front, we can say that the technology represents a milestone for AR titles.
