According to the news of CNN and Reuters, a new feature coming to Instagram will encourage young people to “take a break from Instagram for a while”. Facebook will also reportedly take measures to keep young people away from “unhealthy for them” content in apps. Although it has not been explained in detail what these measures will be, it is thought that a change will be made in the algorithms.
This change also indicates that Haugen’s claims are correct. Haugen claimed that Facebook’s algorithms were problematic, did not protect children from harmful content, and removed only part of the hate speech. The new measures actually do not fully respond to the criticisms brought by Haugen and the like. Taking a break and keeping away from harmful content does not mean removing harmful content.
