NVIDIA, one of the most popular video card manufacturers in the world, continues to host developers and designers for its platform called NVIDIA Studio. The company’s guest this week is Pasquale Scionti, who created the disturbing and beautiful video “Abandoned, Old, Haunted Mansion” with Autodesk 3ds Max, Adobe Substance 3D Painter and Unreal Engine 5.

Artists like Scionti can create their creations at lightning speed with the help of RTX 40 Series GPUs and 110 RTX-accelerated applications, the NVIDIA Studio software suite, and custom Studio Drivers. The new GeForce RTX 4090 GPU offers an extraordinary performance boost, as well as third-generation RT cores, fourth-generation Tensor cores, eighth-generation NVIDIA dual AV1 encoder and 24GB Micron G6X memory with up to 1TB/s bandwidth. 3D artists can now create scenes in fully ray-traced environments with the right physics and realistic materials without the use of placeholders. Using AI-powered RTX Tensor cores and a new optical flow accelerator, DLSS 3 technology generates additional frames and significantly increases frames per second (FPS). This allows for greater smoothness in the field of view and higher movement speeds. NVIDIA is working with popular 3D applications Unity and Unreal Engine 5 to integrate DLSS 3.

DLSS 3 also adds to the workflows on the NVIDIA Omniverse platform, which was developed to create and connect custom 3D business processes. New Omniverse tools for modders like NVIDIA RTX Remix, which were used to create Portal with RTX, rewrite the rules of 3D content creation. The new AV1 encoder delivers higher resolution and clearer image quality with a 40% efficiency increase, while improving the quality of video and creative live stream workflows. AV1 integration will be available in OBS Studio, DaVinciResolve and Adobe PremierePro (with Voucoder plug-in) later this month.

The new dual encoders deliver up to 8K resolution capture performance at 60 FPS with GeForceExperience and OBS Studio, while nearly halving video export times. These encoders will be available later this month in popular video editing applications such as Blackmagic Design’s DaVinciResolve, the Voucoder plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro, and Jianying Pro, China’s most used video editor. The latest AI technologies, such as AI-powered renderers and new video editing tools in DaVinciResolve, will provide up to 2x performance gains over the previous generation, ushering in a new era in the AI ​​revolution.

Let’s come to the story of the Abandoned, Old, Haunted Mansion video!

With photorealistic details and surprisingly lifelike textures, the visual impact of the Old, Abandoned, Haunted Mansion is undeniable. But a key feature of Scionti’s work is the deliberate omission of certain details for the audience to create their own narrative. With details like a ghost painting on the staircase, overturned furniture, a portrait of a woman who may have lived in the mansion, and a mirror that looks like someone broke it in the middle, Scionti adds mystery to the haunted mansion. Regarding this, Scionti says: “Maybe whatever happened is still echoing in these walls. It’s abandoned and surrendered to nature.”

Scionti also states that he is inspired by the works of HR Giger, HP Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe and often dreams about the worlds he wants to create before bringing them to life in 3D. Still, Scionti states that he does not have a dark side, and that this theme only appears in his works.

The artist began designing the Old, Abandoned, Haunted Mansion by placing pictures of abandoned places on an inspiration board. He created a warm mood with the sunlight filtering through the windows, doors and broken walls by giving place to the structures taken over by nature. Next, he modeled in-scene objects such as ceiling lamps, painting frames, and stairs with Autodesk 3ds Max. Maintaining photorealism with RTX-accelerated AI noise removal, Scionti also achieved easy-to-edit, interactive renders using the GeForce RTX 3090 GPU and choosing the default Autodeskrender tool. Versatile Autodesk 3ds Max software supports third-party GPU-accelerated rendering tools such as V-Ray, OctaneRender, and Redshift, giving RTX owners additional options in their creative workflow.

In exporting renders, Scionti was able to do this up to 80% faster than the previous generation using GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs. Scionti imported models such as the ceiling lamp and various paintings into Adobe Substance 3D Painter to apply unique textures. It used RTX accelerated light and ambient shielding to bake its objects in a matter of seconds.

The curtains, the cover on the sofa and the ghost figure were also modeled using Marvelous Designer, a realistic fabric making program. The Marvelous Designer team recommends using GeForce RTX 30 and other NVIDIA RTX GPU class GPUs on the system requirements page, as well as downloading the latest NVIDIA Studio driver. Other objects, such as the wooden ceiling, were created using QuixelMixer, an all-in-one texture and material creation tool designed to be intuitive and extremely fast. Scionti then completed the remaining elements of his work by searching QuixelMegascans, the largest and fastest growing 3D scanning library. After the composition was completed, he applied the final details in Unreal Engine 5.

Using Unreal Engine 5, Scionti enabled hardware-accelerated RTX ray tracing, resulting in high-quality and interactive 3D designs. It also took advantage of NVIDIA DLSS, preserving high-quality details while upscaling frames rendered at lower resolution. He then created his scene with beautiful lighting, shading and textures. The new GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs will use DLSS 3, soon to be available for UE5, with AI Frame Rendering to further enhance interactivity in the viewport.

Scionti has perfected its lighting features with Lumen, the UE5’s GeForce RTX GPU-powered fully dynamic general lighting and projection system. “Nanite meshes have been very useful in getting high polygons in close-up detail. I used the sun and sky for illumination, but to add even more light I placed rectangular light sources outside each opening, such as windows and cracks in walls,” says Scionti. “

Scionti completed the video with a specially tuned instrumental music consisting of piano, violin, synthesizer and percussion instruments. The music gave this piece an unexpected emotional air. Scionti comments on his creative journey, which he sees as a relentless pursuit of knowledge and striving for excellence in his art, as follows: “It’s an honor to see years of dedication and passion recognized, and that’s been my main motivation for getting to this point.”
